Anyone who wants to keep their weight down and not put on weight at Christmas time has a hard time. The festive feast is obviously dangerous – but all the little treats, such as cookies, are much more insidious. This is because you munch them thoughtlessly in between, before and after meals.

Today’s idea for Christmas cookies certainly won’t make it any better – but at least it will put a smile on both your and your loved ones’ faces…

What you need

10 oz flour
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 oz butter, diced
7 oz brown sugar
2 tablespoons water
5 oz semisweet chocolate chips
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 package of chocolate icing

For decoration:

Chocolate eyes
White mini peanut butter cups from Reese’s
Mini pretzels
Peanut Butter M&M’s

And here’s how

Combine flour, baking powder and salt.

Place butter, brown sugar and water in a saucepan and heat over low heat until butter is melted; stir constantly.

Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until mixture is smooth. Stir in eggs and almond extract.

Stir in the flour mixture and let sit for 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. Bake for 12-14 minutes.

Spread chocolate frosting on the cookies, reserving a small amount for the mouths.

Decorate the faces with chocolate eyes; add peanut butter cups as snouts, the pretzels as antlers and M&M’s as noses. Pipe the mouths with the remaining icing.
