Grandma’s Recipe: How To Make Delicious Peppernuts!

Without question, mulled wine and roasted almonds are the “stars” among Christmas treats. Yet certain other snacks have been unjustly forgotten. Do you remember grandma’s pepper nuts, for example? If you would like to feast nostalgically again, you can do so in no time with our recipe!

What you need

3,5 oz molasses
1 oz honey
1 oz shortening
2 oz margarine
2 eggs
½ lb flour
5 oz white sugar
3,5 oz brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
2 teaspoons anise extract
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
4 oz powdered sugar for dusting

And here’s how

Whisk molasses, honey, shortening and margarine in a saucepan over medium heat until mixture is creamy.

Remove from heat, let cool, then stir in eggs.

Combine flour, white sugar, brown sugar, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, anise, cinnamon, baking powder, pepper and salt in a large bowl.

Add the molasses mixture and stir until smooth.

Let rest in the refrigerator for two hours, then roll the dough into small balls.

Preheat oven to 160 degrees and bake the dough balls for 10 to 15 minutes.

Sprinkle the finished peppernuts with powdered sugar.
