Most children hate fish as much as they hate “stinky cheese”. But with the first real hangover that we have as young adults, we learn to really appreciate herrings and co. as electrolyte donors. But it doesn’t always have to be canned fish, though. We’ve got a recipe for you today that’s guaranteed to knock your socks off: Here’s how to prepare herring the old-fashioned way!

What you need

25 fl. oz vinegar (white wine vinegar)
25 fl. oz water
1 lemon
1 cup oil for frying
3.5 oz flour
salt and pepper
3 large onions
5 bay leaves
2 tablespoons of mustard seeds
1 tablespoon juniper berries
1 teaspoon pepper – grains, black
4 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 chili pepper, dried
0,5 teaspoon ½ dill
0,5 teaspoon ½ allspice
2 cloves

And here’s how!

Cut off the head of the fish and dab the rest.

Cut a lemon in half, squeeze it and rub it on the fish.

Season the fish with the prepared herb mixture and salt, then rub with flour and fry in plenty of oil.

Add water and vinegar to another high pan, salt, sugar, pepper, juniper berries, mustard seeds, chili peppers, cloves and bay leaves and heat briefly.

Cut the onions into rings, put them together with the broth in a Tupperware dish and put the fish in it.

After a short standing time, cut the fish and serve together with the dill.
