There aren’t really many German sweet pastry specialties. Germany is better known for its bread and, of course, sausage (we won’t even get started on the beer here). However, there are one or two German pastry exports: Franzbrötchen from Hamburg, for example. Or also Nussecken.

If you want to know how you can prepare the latter authentically yourself, we have the perfect recipe for you here!

For the dough

2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch of salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1/2 cup butter
6 tablespoons apricot jam

For the nut layer

1 cup butter
5 tablespoons rum (or water)
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups hazelnut flour (or almond flour)
1 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped

For the chocolate glace

1 cup dark chocolate, finely chopped

And here’s how!

Preheat the oven to 350°F flour and grease a baking tray.

In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt. Then add sugar, vanilla extract, eggs and butter and mix well.

Spread the dough evenly on the baking sheet and prick it several times with a fork.

Spread apricot jam evenly on the dough.

In a saucepan, melt the butter together with the rum (or water), sugar and vanilla extract until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil!

Add the nuts, mix well and spread over the apricot jam.

Bake for 30 minutes, then let cool and cut into the typical small triangles.

Melt the chocolate and dip the tops of the Nussecken into it.
